St. John

St. John Hackleton's Cliff rises to some 305 meters above sea level (or just over 1000 ft). It provides a commanding view form Pico Tenerieffe in the north to Ragged Point in the South, overlooking all of the Scotland District. The view offered from the top of Hackleton's Cliff - which now has a good road running up it so you can park near the top - has been called "the most perfect prospect on the island."

St. John's Church is one of the most handsome churches on the island. Dating back to 1836, with it's frangipani trees in the yard, it's double staircase of cedar leading to the organ gallery and the high-backed pews it houses some of the island's best antiques. In the churchyard is the grave of Ferdinand Paleologus, the last collateral descendent of Constantine VIII (the Christian Emporer of Constantinople) who was murdered in 1453. Paleologus emigrated to Barbados and died here in 1678.

A little further down is Codrington College, the theological college of the Anglican Church. Christopher Codrington was a Barbadian Planter who became the Governor-General of the Leeward Islands. Born in 1668, he lived as a child in the mansion that is now the College's Principal Lodge. Access to the building is limited due to the their use by the students, but visitors to the college can look around the grounds and the 5 acre woodland that is it's grounds. When Christopher Codrington died, in the same house, in 1710, he bequeathed the property tot he Anglican missionary body, and charged them with setting up a College of Divinity.
