St. Philip

St. Philip There are three lighthouses that still work in Barbados - one at North Point, one at South Point and the one at Ragged Point. There used to be another lighthouse at Needhams Point in St. Michael, but is now a part of the Barbados Hilton Hotel. Just off of Ragged Point, another hot spot for surfers and boogey boarders who know what they are doing - is Culpepper island. The only remaining "dependency" of Barbados, Culpepper Island is an extremely small uninhabited island, overgrown with bush.

Father down the rugged coast of St. Philip are Sam Lords Castle and The Crane Beach and Hotel. The latter is now the oldest hotel on the island having been started in the late 19th Century. The former, Sam Lord's castle, was built by Sameul Hall Lord in the 1820's. It is one of the finest mansions in Barbados, in Regency style and castellated. Legend says that at night, Sam Lord hung lanterns in the coconut trees so that passing mariners would think they had reached the safe port of Bridgetown. The ships would run aground on the reef as the tried to approach and would then be looted. And although Sam Lord had a reputation as a rogue, there is no proof that he did this, and indeed his famed "buried treasure" has never been found.
